Only 1,920 Of These Ridiculous NASCAR Muscle Cars Were Ever Made, And One Just Sold For $193K

This 1970 Plymouth Superbird is one of 1,920 examples produced for a single model year. Powered by a replacement 440ci Super Commando V8 linked with a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission, the car is finished in Limelight Green with a black vinyl top over black vinyl upholstery. The vehicle was refurbished in North Carolina in 1986 by its second owner. Equipment includes a nose cone, flip-up headlamps, a rear wing, Rallye 15″ wheels, power brakes, power steering, bench seats, and an AM/FM radio. The fuel pump was replaced in January 2026. This Superbird was sold for USD $193,000 on 04/08/2026.

Based on Plymouth’s mid-size Road Runner model, the 1970-only Superbird was designed for NASCAR competition, which required Chrysler to produce approximately 2,000 examples for homologation. Finished from the factory in Limelight Green (FJ5), this car was repainted in 1986. The vehicle’s aerodynamic nose cone has satin-black graphics and flip-up headlamps, and other exterior features include fender vents, hood pins, a black vinyl roof, a driver-side mirror, simulated side scoops, a 24″-tall stabilizer wing, “Road Runner” cartoon graphics, black “Plymouth” quarter-panel script, and dual exhaust outlets that exit below the chrome rear bumper.

Rallye 15″ road wheels are mounted with BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires measuring 235/60. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is provided by power-assisted front discs and rear drums.

The front and rear bench seats are upholstered in silver-trimmed black vinyl and are complemented by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpeting. Appointments include an AM/FM radio, a heater, bright doorsill plates, and Road Runner–logo floor mats.

A three-spoke steering wheel with a horn ring and a Road Runner “Beep! Beep!” center cap frames a 150-mph speedometer, a clock, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer showed 75k miles at the time of sale.

The 440ci Super Commando V8 is said to have been replaced prior to 1987. It is equipped with a four-barrel carburetor, and a removed carburetor will accompany the vehicle. The fuel pump was replaced in January 2026, and the oil and filter were changed.

Power is routed to the rear wheels through a three-speed TorqueFlite automatic transmission and an 8¾” rear end.
