One-Off Mustang Commissioned By Carroll Shelby Himself
The chance to own a one-of-a-kind Ford Mustang commissioned by Carroll Shelby himself has popped up on Bring A Trailer. This one-off 1968 Shelby EXP500 CSS was built as a faithful replica to the original Green Hornet Prototype that Shelby Automotive worked on back in the late 1960s.
During the early 2000s, Shelby enlisted the expertise of Legendary G.T. Continuation Cars, the authorized builder of recreation classic Shelby Mustangs, to recreate the 1968 “Green Hornet” Shelby prototype using a 1968 Ford Mustang California Special model as a base.
A GT500-style grille, Lucas fog lights, fender extensions, and a fiberglass ventilated hood with a ram-air scoop contribute to the Mustang’s distinctive appearance. Sequential taillights, a ducktail rear spoiler, and white-and-gold side stripes with EXP 500 C.S.S. lettering complete the iconic look. The 15″ cast-alloy 10-spoke wheels, featuring Highland Green accents with polished outer lips, are a visual delight. They are equipped with 235/60 front and 255/60 rear Goodyear Eagle GTE tires, delivering both style and performance.
Inside, the cabin reflects the car’s dual identity — a blend of vintage charm and modern comfort. Reupholstered during the 2000s refurbishment, the front bucket seats and rear bench are adorned in gold vinyl, complemented by a color-coordinated headliner, door panels, and lower dashboard. The woodgrain Shelby steering wheel frames the Legendary G.T. Continuation Cars/Carroll Shelby-branded instrumentation, featuring a 160-mph speedometer, a 10k-rpm tachometer, a quartz clock, and gauges for fuel level and coolant temperature.
Beneath the hood lies a replacement 428ci V8, boasting a Holley four-barrel carburetor, a high-volume fuel pump, and Shelby-branded enhancements. The power is harnessed by a three-speed C6 automatic transmission and a Currie 9″ rear end, ensuring an exhilarating driving experience. The suspension features a coil-sprung independent front suspension and a live rear axle with leaf springs and Koni shocks. The four-wheel disc brakes provide reliable stopping power, adding a modern touch to this classic beauty.
Owned by the Carroll Shelby Children’s Foundation from 2005 until 2019, it has earned accolades, including a 2022 MCACN Sponsor Pick award. The car will come with a Deluxe Marti report, a Shelby Automobiles/Legendary G.T. Continuation Cars Certificate of Authenticity, and a copy of a previous Montana title.
