1984 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 5-Speed

This 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser BJ40 was acquired by the current owner in 2018 and was subsequently refurbished following its importation from Costa Rica to the US in 2019. A replacement 3.0-liter diesel inline-four and a five-speed manual transmission were installed, and the body was refinished in beige over green leather upholstery. The truck is equipped with 15″ steel wheels with 33″ BFGoodrich tires as well as manually locking front hubs, a dual-range transfer case, a removable hardtop, a pintle hitch, fog lights, and rear jump seats.

The truck was refinished in beige circa 2018 and features a removable hardtop with a white roof along with fog lights, dual side mirrors, an Elite Land Cruisers decal, a pintle hitch, rear ambulance-style doors, and a rear-mounted spare tire. Close-up photos of the paintwork and trim are presented in the gallery.

The 15″ steel wheels feature polished hubcaps and are mounted with 33×10.5″ BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tires. The truck is equipped with manually locking front hubs, and the selling dealer reports electric power steering has been added. Braking is from front discs and rear drums. Service in March 2021 is said to have included removing three front and rear leaf springs as well as replacing the front inner axle seals, brake shoes, and rear brake lines.

The refreshed interior features a split front bench seat and inward-facing rear jump seats trimmed in green leather that extends to the door panels, while a brown cover lines the floor. The cabin has dual sun visors, a dash pad, and three-point front seat belts.

The leather-wrapped steering wheel frames a replacement 160-km/h speedometer as well as gauges for oil pressure, coolant temperature, amperage, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 128 kilometers (~80 miles), which is said to represent the mileage accumulated since completion of the refurbishment.

The 3.0-liter B diesel inline-four is said to have been replaced with an overhauled unit circa 2018. An oil change was performed in March 2025. Photos of compression-test readings are shown in the gallery.

Power is routed to the rear or all four wheels through a five-speed manual transmission that was installed during the refurbishment. The truck is equipped with a dual-range transfer case. A fluid leak is noted.
