Insane BMW M4 Sets Drag Racing World Record, Drives Home

When you think of a car that holds a world record in the quarter-mile, your mind likely shifts to a full-on drag car. The kind of car that eliminates anything it doesn’t need to go faster to save weight. It might look like a regular car, but inside is a barren cabin with little more than a cage, a seat, and a steering wheel. That’s not the case for the BMW G82 M4, which made a world record quarter-mile pass. Not only did it do it with a full interior and on the brakes, but it then drove home.
Quickest BMW G82 In The World
Pure Drivetrain Solutions uploaded a video in which its BMW G82 M4 made an incredibly quick pass at Maple Grove Raceway in Mohnton, Pennsylvania. Just a day earlier, the team dropped a clip of the car on the chassis dyno, proclaiming that dyno numbers don’t matter, withholding the power it actually produced. That very car went on to break a world record, snatching the title as the quickest BMW S58/B58 in the quarter.
While they are withholding power numbers, the mad scientists at Pure Drivetrain Solutions do share some details on this record-holding BMW G82. The builder is Insomnia Motorsports, which has outfitted the car with a Visconti Stage X Plus engine. It’s set up with a Precision 73.9r turbo, which has a horsepower rating of 1,450 HP attached to it. This may be a clue as to what to expect from this exact combo.
World Record S58/B58 Build Highlights
- Insomnia built G82 with Visconti Stage X Plus engine and Precision 73.9R turbo, horsepower is unknown.
- Pure Drivetrains Solutions contributed transmission, torque converter, and transfercase.
- Still has full interior and is fully functional in normal traffic, driven to and from track.
- Made a 7.62-second quarter-mile pass at 180 mph.
Pure Drivetrain Solution also set it up with some upgrades of its own, including a Stage 3 transmission, billet back torque converter, and an upgraded transfer case. Some other build specs include Ecutek and Motiv Reflex tuning and control, upgraded axles from Drive Shaft Shop, and an Insomnia fuel system. That’s a whole lot of bark, so what’s the bite? After a few passes, Pure’s BMW clocked a 7.62-second quarter-mile pass at 180 mph. It has a 1.3-second 60-foot and a 4.97 eighth-mile time. That’s absolutely absurd by any standard and was ultimately enough to raise the bar for the BMW M4 owners of the world.
What’s even more ridiculous about this car is the fact that it’s still got a full interior. There’s no roll cage to cramp things up, either. Maybe it won’t pass tech inspection, but it makes this accomplishment even more insane than it already is. As is the fact that the driver was on the brake at the very end. That means there’s even more potential in this monstrosity.
This Record-Holding BMW Is Still Streetable

Now, you might be thinking the interior is just for show and is nothing more than dead weight. That’s not the case, though. This car was driven to and from the track. Despite being a total monster, there’s no drama. It seems to have awesome street manners, and the passengers within are completely comfortable along the way. That in and of itself is a testament to how well thought this over-the-top build truly is.
